City pushes for proper disposal of mercury

THE Cebu City government would implement the Managing Special Waste ordinance or City Ordinance 2450 on the proper disposal of mercury waste, especially at the household level, according to former Cebu City councilor Nida Cabrera.

The City Ordinance 2450 authored by Cabrera was passed in January 2016. “We would also observe the proper procurement or bidding of a treatment facility,” Cabrera told the reporters. Mercury can cause chronic poisoning and abdominal pain.

Cabrera said they asked the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB-7) to exempt the barangays from securing license for their materials recovery facility (MRF). “We asked them (EMB-7 to allow us) to have a centralized MRF near the Inayawan dumpsite, which is less expensive,” Cabrera added.
