CEBU City Councilor Pastor Alcover Jr. called on Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña to reconvene the city’s Mining Regulatory Board (CCMRB) following reports of rampant quarrying in the city’s three mountain barangays.

In a privilege speech during last Tuesday’s session, Alcover said the “deplorable condition” of a portion of the road traversing barangays Pit-os, Binaliw and Agsungot were caused by quarrying in these areas.

He said there were witnesses who spotted 10-wheeler dump trucks transporting 20 tons of waste soil in these areas.

Alcover told the council that only one permit was approved by the city’s mining board, yet there were three operators who continually conduct quarrying in the three barangays.

Councilor Jerry Guardo asked to refer the issue to the council’s environment committee for study.

The councilor also called on City Hall’s Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW) to check on the quarrying.
