Escaped inmate back, now in isolation

AN inmate who was recaptured nearly two months after escaping from the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center (CPDRC) was placed in isolation for his own protection.

“(We put Arnel Mait in isolation) because of his escape. We’re also putting him there for his safety (from other inmates),” CPDRC Asst. Warden Bobby Legaspi said.

Mait escaped from CPDRC last July 25 by reportedly wearing a visitor’s ID and placing an ink mark on his arm using an improvised rubber stamp.

He was recaptured by the Cebu provincial police and military personnel in Barangay Tigbon, Calatrava town Negros Occidental last Sept. 23.

Legaspi said there were a lot of inmates who were angry at Mait since his escape prompted Cebu Gov. Hilario Davide III to suspend their privileges.

“Conjugal visits were suspended and we lost the warden (Romeo Manansala), the consultant (Marco Toral) because of the incident,” Legaspi said.

Legaspi said he ordered Lito Granada, the designated “mayor” of the CPDRC inmates, to keep Mait safe from the angry inmates.

Legaspi also warned the other inmates that if something happens to Mait, their privileges will be suspended again.

Legaspi said Mait and suspected drug lord Alvaro “Barok” Alvaro were in separate isolation rooms.
