CEBU City led two other cities in Metro Cebu as the most populous highly urbanized cities in Central Visayas last year, according to the data from the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015) conducted last August 2015.

Rolando Taghap, regional director of Philippine Statistics Authority 7 (PSA-7), said one of the implications of the growing population is that more people would compete for the depleting resources and demand would overwhelm supply and where scarcity would become a driving force.

Taghap also said that another implication of population increase would be space in cities would become denser with more people occupying a fixed area, causing environmental issues.

Taghap also said that the census data also showed that Cebu province had the highest population in the region with 2.94 million, followed by Bohol with 1.31 million and Siquijor with 96,000.

Taghap said the region’s population had also grown to 6,041,903 from 5.51 million in the 2010 census.

As of August 1, 2015, the country’s population is recorded at 100.98 million.

Taghap said that the data gathered from the census play an important role in aiding leaders to craft laws that are relevant, timely and responsive to the needs of the population.
