Malacañang has officially declared today, a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City, as the city marks the 496th anniversary celebration of Kadaugan sa Mactan.

Proclamation No. 198 was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte’s Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, declaring April 27, 2017 as a non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City in celebration of “Kadaugan sa Mactan.”

“The Battle of Mactan is among the significant events in the Philippine history and serves as testimony to the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Filipinos. It is but fitting and proper that the people of Lapu-Lapu be given the opportunity to celebrate and participate in such an occasion with appropriate ceremonies,” the proclamation reads.

As part of the week-long celebration, the mascots of Datu Lapu-Lapu, Reyna Bulakna and the Asian Dowitcher were presented on Tuesday evening at the food festival in Liberty Shrine.

Mayor Paz Radaza, who has just returned on Tuesday after serving the 90-day suspension by the Sandiganbayan, said the mascots are an added attraction in this year’s celebration.

She said they included the Asian Dowitcher as this can be found at the bird sanctuary on Olango Island.

Along with the presentation of the mascots, they also unveiled the 3D mural paintings displayed at the Liberty Shrine. The paintings feature the very important sites and local products such as the Our Lady of the Rule Parish, Datu Lapu-Lapu, Bird Sanctuary and Lapu-Lapu guitar.

The Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System has already released a traffic plan for the reenactment of the “Kadaugan sa Mactan” today at 8:30 a.m. at the Liberty Shrine.

The road leading to Liberty Shrine from corner Mactan-Maribago will be closed to traffic.

Kapuso actress Kris Bernal will portray the role of Lapu-Lapu’s wife, Reyna Bulakna.

The “StarStruck” Season 4 winner will be joined by Tony Labrusca and James Ryan Cesena, finalists of ABS-CBN’s “Pinoy Boyband Superstar” who will play Lapu-Lapu and Magellan, respectively.
