Three Cebuanos will be wearing the nations tricolors after they were chosen to represent the country in the 29th Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) in Malaysia this August.

A source close to the men’s volleyball national team who asked for anonymity revealed to Cebu Daily News on Wednesday afternoon that Cebu’s Alden Dave Cabaron and Relan Taneo were chosen as two of the 12 regulars of the team while Southwestern University’s John Eduard Carascal was named as one of the two reserve players.

Joining the trio are team captain Johnvic De Guzman, Geuel Asia, Alnakran Abdilla, Mark Alfafara, Bryan Bagunas, Reyson Fuentes, Bonjomar Castel, Herschel Ramos, Jack Kalingking, Gregorio Dolor and reserve player Peter John Quiel.

Men’s head coach Sinfronio Acaylar admitted that it was difficult for him to trim some good players in the process but he cited that there are certain criteria to meet in each position which made him decide on who to include in the team.

“There are criteria per position, like the setter, outside hitter, middle, opposite and libero. We chose the players who attended with the commitment to serve the country and we based on their experiences also,” said Acaylar.

Among those who failed to make it to the team include Cebuano John Kenneth Sarcena, Jeff Malabanan, Louwie Chaves and Edward Camposano.
However, it’s not the end of the road for these players as Acaylar plans to pick them up for training after the 2017 SEAG.

“I’m so proud of my men’s players because they don’t hold grudges. They know what the country needs and I told them that I will pick them up after SEA Games to continue their training. I’m so thankful [to them for] that,” Acaylar said.
