The Consolacion Sarok Weavers broke Mandaue City’s aura OF invincibility, pulling off a huge 84-78 upset win in Game 1 of the North Division Finals in the 2017 Cebu Governor’s Cup Under-21 Inter-cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament last Saturday night at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Complex.

Consolacion snapped Mandaue’s 10-game win streak and dealt the host team’s first-ever loss in the tournament. More importantly, the Sarok Weavers moved a win away from advancing to the Governor’s Cup Finals, and they will try to do that when they host Mandaue for the series’ Game 2 tonight at the Consolacion Sports Complex.

“We were more aggressive. We made sure to contain their shooter and prevent them from dominating the rebounds so they could not run their fastbreak attack,” said Consolacion coach Delfin Pepito Jr. after the game that only had three deadlocks and two lead changes in a surprising domination by the Sarok Weavers.

Applying a pesky one-on-one defense, Consolacion forced Mandaue to commit too many errors that allowed them to erect a 41-30 lead late in the first half.

Though playing without one of its top guns in Jancork Cabahug, Mandaue didn’t up easily and knotted the score at 57-all after three quarters of play.

Emmanuel Villamor and Cyril Sabellana then helped Consolacion thwart Mandaue’s uprising as the former scored 12 points and the latter dumped seven in the final period.

Villamor paced Consolacion with a game-high 25 points, JC Escalona wound up 21, Sabellana unloaded 18 and Patrick Montaño added 10.

Froilan Mangubat topped Mandaue with 18 markers, JB Damolo finished with 17, Aljie Mendez doated 15, Ken Gato had 13 and Christopher Isabelo pitched in 10.
