The University of Cebu (UC) volleyball team has had an up and down last season in the Cebu Schools Athletics Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) last year.

The boys’ team had a decent outing in the indoor volleyball competition, making it up to the semifinals in only its first year in the league.

The beach volleyball team did a better job, pulling off a shocking championship victory over the University of San Carlos (USC) in the finals.

But UC’s girls’ indoor team didn’t quite make an impact, finishing with just a 2–4 (win-loss) record last season, which is the third-worst record in the league after USPF’s 1–5 card and Cebu Eastern College (CEC) 0–6 slate.

With this, expect UC’s teams to step up this year when the new Cesafi season begins in August.

During the off-season, UC’s boys’ team bolstered its lineup, adding veteran presence by acquiring former USC Baby Warrior Gamaliel Enriquez, former University of San-Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) hitter Axel Abatayo, Rex Cabahug, Josh Manto, Ed Matbagon, and Jan Suico, who last played for the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF).

Even with these additions, UC boys’ head coach Alan Flores believes the run to the crown will be difficult.

“It’s going to be hard because other schools also have reinforcements,” he said.

But Flores said the team is motivated to give it a try.

“We will give [our] 100 percent in every game. Our aim is to give honor to our school when it comes to volleyball,” Flores said.

The UC girls’ volleyball team, meanwhile, has a tougher task ahead, especially after losing prized middle-blocker Zenneth Perolino last May.

But the team remains optimistic coming into the new season.

The team, according to UC girls’ trainer Jay-r Tañola, has a new captain ball in Rena Mojado, who is from USPF. It also added middle-spiker Kylah Sanchez and setter Shaira Devina.

“We will really prepare for the Cesafi and hopefully, the team can improve from what they have shown in the Shakey’s tournament,” said Tañola after the Webmasters ended up with a dismal 0-3 card in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League – Central Visayas Leg last month.
