Mandaue City is cracking the whip on jaywalking violators as the city’s traffic enforcement team apprehended 11,900 people in six months.

Glenn Antigua, Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team) head, said this is to instill discipline among pedestrians, which is part of the city’s aim to become a traffic discipline zone.

“Ang atong target kay ang Mandaue mahimo na syang traffic dicipline zone, para ang focus na lang sa atong mga enforcer kay mag-manage na lang sa traffic ug dili na lang magsige ug bantay sa mga tao nga pataka ug labang (Our target is to make Mandaue City a traffic discipline zone so that our traffic enforcers’ focus will be to manage traffic and not to monitor people who just cross the street anywhere),” Antigua said.

Jaywalking violators are made to pay a P50 fine, and the collected fines will be placed in the city’s trust fund, which will be used on projects such as in maintaining Team vehicles and buying Team’s office supplies.

He also said that they would only issue citations for jaywalking violators, who would be required to pay the P50 fine at the City Treasurer’s Office within three days of apprehension.

If they would not pay the P50 fine, then they would be subpoenaed and would be required to do three days of community service.
