SMD dragonboat squad bags gold, silver in Cagayan de Oro

THE Sugbu Mighty Dragons (SMD) won its lone gold medal in the 2nd Kagayhaan Gold Cup Dragon Boat Competition yesterday with a massive performance in the women’s 200-meter half boat event at the Cagayan River in Cagayan de Oro City, Misamis Oriental.
The Mighty Dragons, formerly known as the Gruppo Habagat Dragon Boat team, also bagged a silver medal in the 500m women’s half boat challenge.

Coming into the race with a new, all-girl firepower, SMD edged out Liceo B with an elapsed time of 1:05.84. Liceo B finished two seconds behind the Mighty Dragons in 1:07.97 to settle for the silver medal while the Speed Devilz took home the bronze in 1:09.96.

In the 500m event, SMD (3:01.66) finished second behind Liceo A (2:59.30) while Liceo B (3:06.54) came in third.

Meanwhile. another Cebuano team, the PADS PWD Adaptive Dragon Boat team also gave a gallant fight by pocketing a bronze in the 500-meter mixed standard boat action.

Shocking the whole tournament once again with their inspiring performance despite their disabilities, PADS salvaged the third place result after crossing the finish line in 2:27.57.

Liceo (2:22.93) and Speed Devilz (2:23.98) won first and second, respectively.

The Sugbu Mighty Dragons crew was led by Team Captain Arnold Guinocor and coached by Jimmy Petilo of the Philippine Air Force.
