SUBINGSUBING

Hard work, perseverance and prayers are what helped this 22-year-old Mining Engineering Board Exam topnotcher, a Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) graduate.

Pompeii Nikolai Montealegre Subingsubing, who is the son of a businesswoman, said he was also inspired to work harder by his father, who is also an engineer.

He, however, never expected to top the August 2017 board examination.

Subingsubing, who is from Ormoc City, topped the Mining Engineer Licensure Examination with a grade of 90.90 percent.

He was the lone topnotcher from Visayas among the 281 graduates who passed the examination.

According to PRC, 317 examinees took the Mining Engineering Board Exam.

Subingsubing described himself as an average student and had never been on top of his classes from elementary to high school to college.

“I had never excelled in my grade and high school years nor placed at the top [during recognition] during my (school days in Ormoc City where he finished the basic curriculum), even in my college days I was never active,” he said.

He did not even have a goal or a dream to achieve when he graduated from high school.

He said he first took accountancy in the University of the Philippines-Visayas in Tacloban City but he shifted to an engineering course after two years.

He said it was his father who chose this mining engineering course for him.

Like most students, he also hated “Calculus,” which is an important subject in an engineering course.

But he said he never stopped trying and studying and learning Calculus. His efforts paid off and helped him to the top of the board exams.

He said he was a riding a taxicab when a friend texted him that he topped the board exams, and he did not believe it until he saw the PRC list on their website.

“I am feeling great at this moment. I am amazed and I never expected this kind of success,” he said.

Looking back at the challenges he faced during the preparations for taking the board examinations, he said he was happy that his perseverance and hard work paid off.

He said he lived in an apartment and he recalled studying until the wee hours of the morning.

Aside from that, Subingsubing, who is a Catholic, said he prayed a lot during those times and he is grateful that God heard his prayers.

He even joked about his being an average student. He said he had never been a scholar but he is his parents’ scholar.

Subingsubing told Cebu Daily News that his family has always been his inspiration.

“ Everything I do, had done and will do are for my family and to the Lord,” he said.

He said he would pursue geology or proceed to law school after this.

His advice to those who would take the board exams and students to believe in God, seek his guidance, work hard and to persevere.

“Para sa ibang (estudyante) na gusto magMining, dasig lang gyud and never forget to pray always,” he said.

(To those who want to pursue a mining course, work hard and never forget to pray always.)

“The Lord is always listening and guiding us, so never forget to thank him too for all the blessings that he has given us,” he said.

The other topnotchers in the Mining Engineering board exams are Phillip Santi Moncano Morgia of University of the Philippines-Diliman who has an average of 89.80 percent (2nd). and Gelanie Chavez Cabria from Bicol University- Legazpi who gained 89.55 percent (3rd).

CIT-U placed secnd among the top performing schools for the August board examination with a total percentage of 83.33 percent where 45 out 54 examinees passed the exam, next to Saint Louis University which has percentage passed of 94.49 percent.

In 2016 Mining Engineering Licensure Exam, CIT-U graduates bagged the second and third spot with an 89.80 and 88.55 percentage respectively.
