THE UNIVERSITY of Cebu (UC) Webmasters try to inch closer to a spot in the Final Four when they battle the rampaging University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars today in the 17th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Standing in fourth with a 5-4 (win-loss) card, the Webmasters of head coach Yayoy Alcoseba will be giving their all to gain a victory against a Jaguars squad that has played in each and every gameday since last weekend.

A victory will be crucial for the Webmasters as it would tie them up with the idle University of San Carlos (USC) for the third spot.

Though USJ-R is likely to be already feeling the effects of its weeklong game schedule, Alcoseba would rather not let his wards fall into that trap and preached controlled aggression.

“We’re not thinking that they will be tired. Our mindset is to be aggressive and play like our season depended on it,” said the two-time Cesafi champion coach.

The Webmasters’ hopes will once again ride on the shoulders of Cameroonian Frederick Elombi, who has been tearing up the league with league-best numbers of 22.2 points and 15.4 rebounds along with 2.7 steals and 2.2 blocks per game.

On the other side of the fence, the Jaguars are riding high after beating Southwestern University-Phinma, 83-77, last Thursday for their seventh win in nine outings.

Though it was their third straight match this week, the Jaguars looked spry.

Nevertheless, head coach Jun Noel erred on the side of caution and gave his wards a day off yesterday to recover. Noel also intends to absorb the damage that Elombi will most likely cause and instead focus on limiting the contributions of the locals.
