The South All Stars overcame a spirited fourth period surge by their North counterparts to prevail, 104-100, in the Collegiate All-Star Game of the 17th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The South All Stars were up by as many as 18 before the North squad rallied to tie the game at 100-all off a three-pointer from the left wing by Southwestern University (SWU)-Phinma standout Shaquille Imperial and a steal and an unmolested layup by the University of Cebu’s (UC) Justine Dacalos with 2:45 left in the game.

But the South All Stars stood tall as University of the Visayas (UV) forward Bassiere Sackor banked in a short jumper to put his team back in front, 102-100, with 1:02 left.

The South squad then held off its opponents by grabbing several offensive rebounds in the final seconds before University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) star guard Jaybie Mantilla sank two free-throws with 2.4 seconds remaining to put the win in the bag.

UV ace Rey Suerte bagged MVP honors with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists. Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) off-guard Jemcerson Sable nailed three trifectas en route to scoring 14 points while UV forward Monic Soliva also had 14 and seven boards.

Another UV standout, Josue Segumpan, added 13 while Mantilla rounded out the South’s double-digit scorers with 12.

Suerte, Sable and Soliva were joined in the game’s Mythical Five by Imperial and UC’s powerhouse, Frederick Elombi.

North juniors win

The high school All Star game saw the North win over the South, 104-83.

Don Bosco standout Grenal Malubay took MVP honors after scoring 13 points. Cebu Eastern College stud James Tempra and UC’s Virlou Orquez had 12 apiece.

The aforementioned trio were named the game’s Mythical Five along with the South team’s JJ Rosete of UV and SWU-Phinma’s Patrick Montano.

In the side events, the USJ-R’s high-flyer Miguel Gastador finally hoisted the Slam Dunk Competition title after wowing the judges with a spinning 360-degree slam during the final round.

The three-point title went to UV guard Tristan Albina for the second straight time.

USJ-R’s Van Tindoy and CIT-U’s Marl Laguna also won the high school and college crowns, respectively, in the first ever Obstacle Course competition.
