No moonlighting during office hours, Cabal tells cops

Do not spend your work hours doing other jobs.

This was the warning of Senior Supt. Jonathan Cabal of the Regional Intelligence Division (RID) after reports showed that some members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Central Visayas are having second jobs while simultaneously performing their duties as police officers.

Cabal said he already released an order mandating all members of PNP to avoid engaging themselves on other jobs while on active duty. The mandate came from PNP Director General Ronald dela Rosa.

Cabal revealed that some policemen are also working as security escorts to politicians. Others have joined ride-hailing companies such as Uber and Grab.

He clarified that PNP is not against policemen having second jobs, as long as their duties as cops are not compromised.

“They are free to decide if they want to engage in businesses. But they have to make sure that their activities are legal,” Cabal said.

He added that cops should only attend to their second jobs once they are done with their tasks in their police offices.

The RID chief reiterated that it is “unethical” for cops to do other things while being paid by the citizens.

The regional intelligence unit has yet to obtain data of police officers who signed up for Grab and Uber.

He added that should police officers need to have other jobs aside from their main profession, supervisors must be formally informed for transparency.

PNP members found guilty of breaking the mandate will be subjected to investigation and will face penalties or administrative cases.
