The University of San Carlos (USC) boys team and the Southwestern University (SWU) – Phinma girls squad inched closer to the crown in the Cesafi secondary volleyball tournament as they beat their respective opponents in Game 1 of the finals Saturday night at the USC Main Gym.

In boys play, USC handed SWU its first loss of the season with a come-from-behind 20-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 15-10 triumph to move a win away from capturing the crown it last won in 2014.

SWU-Phinma, meanwhile, used the loss of their boys’ squad as motivation to slay the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 12-25, 15-9, to take Game 1.

Both SWU girls and USC boys can close out the series on Sunday at the USPF Covered Court in barangay Lahug, Cebu City.

The University of San Jose-Recoletos defeated the University of Cebu (UC) 25-14, 25-19 to win third place honors in girls play while USPF escaped UC, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18, to take the bronze in the boys division.
