Get to know SWU-Phinma’s stunner, Chyne Mae Saberon

SHE MIGHT steal your attention with her good looks and distinctive charm, but Southwestern University (SWU) – Phinma middle spiker Chyne Mae Saberon is more than just a pretty face.

The 18-year-old rookie from Sibonga, Cebu, is also a fierce competitor on the court as shown in the team’s Game 1 victory over the University of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) in the best-of-three finals of the F2 Logistics Cesafi girls volleyball tournament.

Saberon, the reigning Sibonga Mayor’s Cup Most Valuable Player (MVP), played a vital role in the Game 1 win as she scored five straight points in the third frame, including the set-clinching spike, that gave them a 2-1 advantage in the game.

Saberon also has a successful career in pageantry with the 2016 Binibining Sibonga and 2016 Miss Simala 1st runner-up awards tucked under her belt.
But volleyball has been part of her life since three years ago in Sibonga.

“I started playing volleyball because there was an interschool meet and I was picked up by the head coach of our school in Sibonga and also because of my mother. She was always there by my side to support me wherever my game was and she’s always there to inspire me every day to be the best

version of myself,” she recalled.

Since then, she already showed potential as she bagged numerous awards such as the Mayor’s Cup best blocker, best spiker, and the 2017 Sports Fiesta MVP, blocker and spiker plums.

The Grade 12 student continued her exploits in Cebu City last year when she played for their department in SWU’s Siglakas Days that impressed no less than the school’s head coach Roy Ulan. She then became a starter in the team just in her first year.

She again showed a glimpse of her talent in Game 1 but then lost steam in Game 2 as she struggled all-game long and finished with just three hits paired with four errors that allowed USPF to force a deciding Game 3.

That game will be on Saturday.

So as the day of reckoning nears, Saberon is wishing that she can bounce back from her lackluster performance in Game 2 and vows to give her best to help the Baby Cobras win its first title since 2015 at the University of San Carlos Main gym.

“We expect a good game from the other team. We will give our best against USPF for the final game of Cesafi 2017,” she said.
