DEPUTY MAYORS

Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and 10 other city officials have been sued over the appointment of some city councilors as deputy mayors.

According to the complainant, former National Bureau of Investigation–Central Visayas Director Florencio Villarin, the Local Government Code only allows the appointment of officials of the executive branch. City councilors are part of the legislative body.

Many netizens wondered why Mayor Tomas Osmeña seemed to not be aware of the law. While there are those who questioned the complainant’s motive for filing a complaint.

Dot Soq Mon wrote, “Ignorance of the law? Why did the city government appoint deputy mayors when it’s not allowed by the law? Or, is this law newly implemented?”

Meh Jeckai said, “Tomas Osmeña thought he can be a lawyer, that’s why he’s making his own rules. Good job, Ombudsman.”

Ivor Rey Lucero commented, “Uhmm, let me guess – he (Lawyer Florencio VIllarin) is planning to run for a position next election that’s why he’s making noises now.”

Danilo Gabato also shared, “The vice mayor should not be included in this case. He’s only doing his job as vice mayor.”
