NBS’s make and create arts and crafts festival

There’s always that raw energy at National Book Store’s events, whether it be a book signing by a bestselling author or the recent Make and Create Arts and Crafts Festival.

The latter in particular attracted the hip and artful bunch, turning SM City Cebu’s Northwing Atrium into an interactive art paradise.

Unleashing the art lovers’ creativity, the activity displayed art essentials from papers, colored pencils, watercolors, oil pastels, markers and pens, of all kinds.

Everything a fanatic or aspiring artist should have.

The two-day event, held Oct. 14 and 15, were participated in by 30 brands all of which created a vibrant atmosphere with workshops, discussions and product displays.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, National Book Store has proven that it has yet to be outdone, always updating itself with modern materials, techniques and trends.

With its wide array of colors and palettes, premiere art supply maker Prismacolor slashed its major sets up to a hefty 50 percent off exclusively during the event.

On the other side of the booth were Caran D’Ache’s colored pencils as well as that of the multiple toned variety like Chameleon, known for its ability to change colors in response to environment and mood.

Popular brand Sharpie added to the mix by challenging and expanding the definition of color application. Sharpie colors can be used on various canvas, including paper, textile or ceramic.

Then, there’s the Japanese brand Marvy Uchida, regular essentials for those into calligraphy, fabric markers, chalk markers, specialty pens, and brushes. A reliable canvas is a good foundation for one’s piece of art, and this fact is not lost on Fabriano and Acquarello with their finest paper selection.

Famous for its selection of paper that can hold water, Acquarello is composed of 100 percent cotton while Fabriano is 20.  Limelight, a favorite among notebook collectors, also displayed its selection of journals, sketch books and notebooks.

A highlight of the event was a free calligraphy session done by the brand’s inhouse experts as most customers’ journals were being personalized with unique cover art designs and quotes. Slime surprise!

Who would know that your regular household-school item — the Elmer’s Glue — is now a revered preschool plaything. Pour out the entire contents of all three 4-oz Elmer’s Glitter glue into a bowl, add one and a half baking soda and your choice of food coloring, and three tbsp. contact lens solution. Knead. And your colorful slime is ready.

Rounding out the list is Uni, a brand known for its practical range of highlighters, markers, mechanical pens, drawing pens and markers.

Uni also carries a diverse range of lines from Signo, Click Gel, Jetstream and Uniball. Indeed, National Book Store’s Make and Create Festival was all things artsy and crafty. Here’s to more artful endeavors from the country’s leading book store.
