Magis Eagles settle for third place in Pilipinas Cup

THE SACRED Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) Magis Eagles’ under-16 boys football squad salvaged the third place in the Pilipinas Cup International Invitational Youth Football Championship in Clark Freeport, Pampanga.

The Magis Eagles beat the University of Santo Tomas (UST) via a thrilling penalty shootout, 4-3 (1-1), to claim third place honors yesterday.
Despite placing third, the Magis Eagles still bettered its performance this year as they placed fourth in last year’s competition.

Ateneo de Cebu failed to advance to the championship round after losing to G.O.M Center for Excellence Team A, 1-0, in the semifinals with key player Julian Cabatingan sitting on the bench because of an injury.

In the battle for third, the Magis Eagles’ also played without key players Gerald Abao and John Vincent Eduave, who were nursing injuries.

John Pomeroy Veloso scored the first goal for the Magis Eagles at the 17th minute, but UST retaliated with a game tying goal at the 43rd minute.

Regulation ended with a tied score, which forced a shootout.

Veloso logged his second goal during the penalty shootout. Yoshiki Yamaguchi, Nao Osawa and Musashi Ayabe also scored while goal keeper Miguel Galang blocked UST’s last kicker to seal the win.
