Philippines is new Asean age-group chess champion

FILIPINO woodpushers Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmariñas, Cavite, Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian of Flora, Kalinga Apayao and Samantha Babol Umayan of Davao City combined for 22.0 points Sunday night to capture the blitz gold medal in the Girls 12 and under division of the just concluded 18th Association of Southeast Asian Nations Age Group Chess Championship in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia.

The Filipinos ended the supremacy of Vietnam in the Asean region by winning the overall title with 83 golds, 37 silvers and 29 bronze medals in the weeklong meet.

Sebastian and San Diego, also won the individual blitz gold with 8.0 points each in nine rounds. Laysa Latifah of Indonesia took the silver with 7.0 points while Umayan and Krisen Yochabel Marie Sanchez of Cebu got 6.0 points each for 4th to 5th spots.

San Diego bagged six gold medals in the tournament, the same gold medal output of Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Sta. Rosa (Girls 8 and under) and Ruelle Canino of Cagayan de Oro (Girls 10 and under). The three snatched two golds in standard, two in rapid and two in blitz competitions.

Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Sta. Rosa tallied a perfect 9.0 points to rule the Girls 8 and under of the individual blitz competition while Ruelle Canino of Cagayan de Oro scored 8.5 points to rule the Girls 10 and under class.

Alexis Anne Osena of Manila and Woman Fide Master Allaney Jia G. Doroy of Agusan del Norte shared the gold medal in the Girls 16 and under with 7.0 points in nine outings.

Doroy, a 15-year-old student of Nazareth School of National University, bagged four golds and a bronze while Osena notched four golds.

Woman Candidate Master Mira Mirano of Aklan reigned in the girls 20-and-under with nine wins in as many rounds.

Other individual gold medalists in the blitz competition were: Vincent Ryu Dimayuga of Batangas and Al-Basher Buto of Cainta, who tallied 8.0 points in the Boys 8-and-under; Michael Concio Jr., of Dasmariñas, Cavite in the Boys 12-and-under with 8.0 points; Daniel Quizon of Dasmariñas, Cavite in the Boys 14-and-under (8.0 pts) and Brylle Gever Vinluan of National University in the Boys 18-and-under with 6.0 points in seven rounds.

Team Philippines also dominated the team event of the blitz event.

Meanwhile, National Master Edmundo Gatus of Tondo, Manila tallied 7.5 points to win gold in the Seniors 50 years-old category.
