UV Baby Lancers lose to Chiang Kai Shek by 31 points in PSSBC semifinal round

The end of the line came for the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers as they got waylaid by the Chiang Kai Shek College (CKSC) Blue Dragons, 91-60, in the semifinals of the Philippine Secondary Schools Basketball Championship (PSSBC) yesterday at the SGS Gym in Quezon City.

Ironically, it was a Cebuano in former University of San Carlos wingman John Galinato who helped the Blue Dragons crush the Baby Lancers as he finished with a game-high 19 points.

The Blue Dragons stomped the life out of the Cebuanos early on, as they raced off to a huge 20-point lead, 36-16, after the first 10 minutes of action.

UV was within striking distance, 16-24, when CKSC went on a blistering 12-0 run sparked by Galinato, the son of former commercial basketball standout Abe Galinato. The deficit remained at 20 at halftime and then was boosted to 28, 47-75, heading to the final canto as the Baby Lancers simply got outclassed by the well-oiled offensive machine of the Blue Dragons, the champions of the 2015 edition of this tournament.

The Baby Lancers got 13 points and seven boards from Ivan Maata while Jereolan Omandac pitched in 10 markers.

UV’s big guns fell silent as Jancork Cabahug and JJ Rosete combined for just five points. Cesafi high school MVP Beirn Laurente also managed just eight points.

The Blue Dragons will be taking on the mighty San Beda Red Cubs in the championship game today. San Beda eked by National University, 78-76, behind Evan Nelle’s near-triple double of 15 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds.
