Appreciating culture and traditions in the modern world

WITH the dynamic popularity of social media and all things digital in the modern world, classic and traditional art may be fading into the background for some. The Mall Above All Else, SM Seaside City Cebu brought traditions and heritage alive in the modern world with an Instagram-worthy exhibit of classic Chinese art from the Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students.

The exhibit, which ran from February 11 to 24, featured 396 artworks – 242 lanterns and 154 scrolls – from 45 artists composed of the Chan Lim family and their students.

The passion of Chan Lim, the family patriarch, lies in Oil and Watercolor. While most of his artworks are on canvas, he has forayed into other media such as porcelain plates, Asian lanterns, and fans to infuse Western techniques into the traditional Eastern art.

The Chan Lim Family of Artists and Students (CLFAS) has been engaged in the arts for almost half a century. Presently, they have been going around SM Malls nationwide introducing Western and Eastern arts to various communities in the Philippines.

“If you look at the arts that we have here, they have elements of Chinese painting but it’s very modern already. The strokes are modern, the colors are new. So it’s a very modern way of Chinese painting,” said Alex Chan Lim.

For its second year, the exhibit extended a free workshop to the Philippine Accessible Disability Services, Inc. (PADS); reaching out to the children with disabilities introducing Chinese brush painting. Over 400 attendees including walk-ins and invited schools participated in the free workshop.
