LAPU-LAPU City’s Jerish John Velarde continued his winning ways with three rounds left in the under-12 standard competition of the ongoing Asian Youth Chess Championships 2018 in Thailand.

The 24th-seed Velarde won against eighth-seed Dias Alimbetov of Kazakhstan in the sixth round to improve his score to 4.0 points and climbed to 13th place from 32nd.

Velarde, who bagged a bronze medal in last week’s rapid competition, has now won two straight after dropping his fourth-round match.

Second-seed Bardiya Daneshvar dislodged top-seed Candidate Master (CM) D. Gukesh of India from the top with 6.0 points over the latter’s 5.5 points. The 21st seed Bikram Paul Aditya also from India is at third with 5.0 points.
