FOUR persons were sentenced to two years in jail while another four were ordered by the court to pay P20,000 for selling butane canisters filled with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

Judge Amelie Amor Estrada of the Municipal Circuit Trial Court for Liloan to Compostela sentenced Diego Tachado, Melchor Dalisay, Angelito Dindol and JulitoBarrera to two years in prison after they pleaded guilty during their arraignment last Aug. 3.

Estrada also fined Claire Bocar of Lamac Consolacion P20,000 after she pled guilty to the same offense.

In Mandaue City, Judge Jennifer Pepito-Maniwang of the Branch 1 of the Municipal Trial Courts in Cities (MTCC) ordered Jugie Sabillo and Mark Jhon Lim to pay P20,000 fine for selling LPG-filled butane canisters.

A certain Rafael Bongo was ordered by MTCC Branch 2 Judge Carlos Fernando to pay a P30,000 fine for the same offense last June.

Sabillo, Lim and Bongo were caught by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG-7) selling LPG-filled canisters in their stall at the Mandaue City public market.

The cases against the eight respondents were filed by the Department of Energy (DOE) in relation to Presidential Decree 1865 which prohibits the illegal sale, distribution and transportation of petroleum products.

“I hope that this will serve as a stern warning for those who use and sell LPG-filled butane canisters. These things are very dangerous as most fire incidents can be attributed to portable stoves fueled by butane,” DOE legal officer Russ Mark Gamallo said.

Gamallo said butane canisters are unsuitable for housing high-pressure petroleum substance such as LPG due to its thin aluminum material.
