Sitoy wants to know insurers of shipping companies

Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy asked shipping companies 2GO and Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp to disclose their insurers so the municipal government could pursue their damage claims.

Sitoy said he has doubts over the refusal of the two shipping companies to reveal their insurers.

“I see two possibilities behind this. Either they don’t have insurance coverage or they have already collected the proceeds and are not telling us about it. They profited from the oil spill,” Sitoy told reporters last Monday after a closed door meeting between him, Cebu Provincial Legal Officer Orvi Ortega and 2GO representatives at the Capitol.

The mayor found out that Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corp. is not the insurer of both2GO and Sulpicio Lines Inc. as claimed by the two companies. Cordova asked for P126 million payment for the oil spill that resulted from the collision of their two ships last Aug. 16.
