Doctors and medical students offered Mass on the first night of the vigil wake for Dr. Abbu at the St. Peter’s Memorial Chapel.
Abbu was one of the founders of the group called the Asklepian Circle, formed by scholars of Southwestern University College of Medicine in 1984. The name is from the Greek word “asklepius”, the god of medicine.
Members showed up last night wearing dark blue polo shirts with the group’s logo on their chest.
The group conducts medical missions in Cebu and an annual feeding program for street children.
A 29-year-old rural health physician came to the wake from Daanbantayan town, northern Cebu.
Clent Banaaay said Abbu’s death was a big loss to their circle.
The slain orthopedic surgeon was a faculty member of the College of Medicine and College of Rehabilitative Sciences.
Many of Abbu’s patients were charity cases whom he did not charge for medical-surgical services rendered.
He was also a consultant at the Seaman’s Hospital, Cebu City Medical Center and the Lapu-Lapu District Hospital.
