Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama wants to remove the center island on the main road near the Gaisano Grand Mall in Talamban which he said causes traffic congestion in the area.

Rama came up with the idea after inspecting the Banilad-Talamban (Ban-Tal) road early yesterday morning.

“The center island is occupying the road which causes a bottleneck among vehicles which pass through the curved area,” he said.

From a width of 16.5 feet, the road narrowed down to 11 feet because of the center island, Rama said.

Rama conducted a walk through with market administrator Raquel Arce, Joy Tumulak, operations chief of the Cebu City Traffic Operations Management (Citom) and Bunny Pages who heads the Ban-Tal Traffic Management Board.

No left turn

He instructed Tumulak to coordinate with Arce, who heads the Prevention, Restoration, Enhancement and Beautification (Probe) team and the barangay officials to remove the center island.

Rama said he saw a similar “no left-turn” policy being implemented in San Francisco City in California during his recent visit to the US.

He said San Francisco which is one of the busiest cities in the world does not experience congestion on the road because of traffic control measures, which include no left-turns in some intersections.

The Cebu City government implemented the “no left-turn” policy along BanTal last July to ease the traffic flow in the area.

Widening

Ban-Tal road will be widened from 12.97 meters to 13.4 meters and each lane of the four-lane street will measure 6.7 meters, the standard width for a national road.

Each portion of the sidewalk will measure 1.5 meters. A drainage system is also included in the project.

The road widening project is undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 7.

It started last July 27 along Banilad and Talamban. Excavation work is still ongoing at the University of San Carlos (USC) Talamban.

The road widening project is expected to ease traffic along the Banilad-Talamban corridor. with reports from USJ-R Intern Chens Judale Plenos
