5K of shark fins intercepted by Capitol task force

The Cebu provincial government’s Task Force Kalikasan intercepted a truckload of dried thresher shark fins near the Marcelo Fernan Bridge in Lapu-Lapu City at noon time today.

The truck carried 5,000 kilos of shark fins placed on a 20-foot container van that was headed to the Cebu International Ports for shipment to Hong Kong.

Task force chief Loy Madrigal said the truck driver Marlon Obasa was able to present shipment papers but a provincial ordinance that protects endangered animals including thresher sharks prohibits harvesting of shark fins.

Madrigal suspects that the shark fins came from Zamboanga City and then shipped to Cebu through Lapu-Lapu City.
