The defending champions Goldberry Iloilo Hotel kept the heat up on the rest of the field as it routed the San Jose Bakeshop, 72-38, in the Avenir Sacred Heart Ateneo Alumni Basketball Athletic Association (Shaabaa) Cup basketball tournament last Thursday at the SHS-Ateneo de Cebu basketball courts along Mango Avenue.

The veteran-laden Goldberry splashed the writing on the wall early on as they ran off to a 17-4 lead after the first period to set the tone for the one-sided affair.

Former MVPs Dave Lim and Jeremy Huang tallied 12 points each to pace the winners while Paulsen Uy chipped in 10.

The victory, Goldberry’s seventh in nine games, allowed it to keep the lead in the standings with the Cebu Landmasters close behind at 5-2 (win-loss) after winning over Batch 2014 (1-7), 60-44.

The twin tower combination of siblings Borgy and Justin dela Cruz dominated down low and combined for 25 markers while Christopher Consunji pitched in 11 markers.

The RDAK Stallions also remained within striking distance of the league-leaders with a 44-36 victory over Colours.

The Stallions found themselves in a bind and trailed by 10, 4-14, after the opening canto but turned the tide in the second half where they held Colours to a mere 17 points while scoring 27 of their own.

The trio of Bernard Chioson, Jair Igna and Junie Alejandro conspired to tally 24 points to push the Stallions into a tie for second place with the Cebu Landmasters and the idle Gaisano Capital.

Colours fell to 3-4 for this season.

In Division B, Echo Appliance sent Belo Men 98 to their second straight defeat, 45-36, thanks to the 21-point performance of Serg Al Go Bui.

Rodney Uy helped the cause with 10 points as Echo Appliance pushed their record to 5-2 while Belo Men dropped to 6-2. In other games, Chick@Phil 89 scored a 57-55 squeaker over Shakey’s 94 with Buck Sia and Melvin Tan dropping 18 and 16 points, respectively.
