BOHOL: New homes for quake survivors

By: Contributor September 02,2014 - 10:16 AM

Pantawid Pamilya beneficiary Evangeline Avilla, 43, and her family moved into their temporary shelter in barangay Ubojan in the municipality of Tubigon, Bohol along with other 82 families whose houses were damaged by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake.

“This temporary shelter is a comfortable place to stay. We are now free from the dangers in the tent,” Avilla said in dialect.

The 83 families stay in these transition houses while waiting for their permanent houses to be done.

The temporary shelter is implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and supported by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Provincial Government of Bohol, Tubigon local government unit, and Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection.

DSWD Secretary Corazon “Dinky” Soliman graced the turnover of the 83 temporary shelters recently together with Bohol Gov. Edgardo Chatto, Tubigon Mayor Marlon Amila and Conrad Navidad, Camp Coordination and Camp Management/Evacuation Support Program National Coordinator.

In her message during the turnover, Soliman appreciated and acknowledged the beneficiaries’ contribution in the realization of the project.

“You now own these shelters and you have improved it. This could not be done without your concerted efforts. Thank you for your unity.”

Aside from the temporary shelter, Evelyn also received livelihood assistance from IOM in the form of goods and food stuff for sale that she displays in her porch. She also added some goods to her small sari-sari store using her own money.

The DSWD Central Visayas has already started providing livelihood assistance to these families through its Sustainable Livelihood Program.

Within the month of August, the Ubojan temporary shelter residents, including Evelyn will undergo the Community Driven Enterprise Development training.
