Six education degree graduates from Cebu-based colleges and universities  landed in the top 10 list of the August 2014 Licensure  Examination for Teachers (LET).

Jacqueline Borong Pono, a graduate of the University of San Carlos (USC), ranked third with an average of 88.80 percent in the LET for elementary while Aimae Balbuena of the University of Cebu – Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue campus placed fourth with an average of P88.60.

Gee Rianne Pitogo Gee of Cebu Normal University (CNU) and Joanne Barcelonia of USC got the fifth and eight place respectively while Maria Rina Lazo of CNU ranked ninth.

In the secondary LET, Mariel Ybanez of CNU got the 10th place with an average of 88 percent.

Dr. Antonio Batomalaque, dean of USC’s College of Education, was elated upon learning that its graduate ranked third in the LET.

“We’re very happy. This has been a fruit of labor. We give our students the best we can because we want excellence as much as possible,” he told Cebu Daily News over the phone yesterday.

Batomalaque said the two topnotchers from USC will receive medals, laptops and scholarship grants for their nearest kin.

UC President Augusto Go said the university will also provide financial reward to its topnotcher.

“We always inspire and encourage our students to strive hard to be among the topnotcher. Each year, we try our best,” he said.

Dr. Helen Boholano, associate dean of the CNU’s College of Education, said they expected their graduates to land on the top 10 every year.

She said the university has a LET review center for its education students—a program which she said has given them the boost in the annual exams.

“We believe in our program. We train our students, not only in academics, but also we try to mold their character. Here in CNU, character matters,” Boholano said.

As an incentive, she said they will return the P5,000 paid by their topnotchers during the LET review.

“Having a topnotcher is always a reward for us. We’re very happy with results of the LET,” Boholano said.

The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the Board for Professional  Teachers  (BPT) released the exam results yesterday.

25,301 elementary teachers out of 70,786 examinees passed the LET exams while 26,767 secondary teachers out of 77,803 examinees made it.

Noralyn Sacoco of the Data Center College of the Philippines in Laoag City ranked first with a score of 89.40 percent in the LET exams’ elementary level while Nixon Balandra of the Philippine Normal University in Cadiz City topped the secondary level with a percentage of 90.20 percent.
