The Department of Environment Natural Resources (DENR-7) has issued a special permit for the cutting of 79 trees within the premises of Naga Central School in the City of Naga, Cebu.

The trees, which include Gmelina and mahogany, which are non-indigenous species, have to be felled for the construction of a track and field oval of the City of Naga.

The clearance was granted by DENR Undersecretary Demetrio Ignacio on Sept. 25, 2014 after the submission of the certification from the barangay concerned and from the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) of Naga Central School stating that they do not object to the cutting of the trees.

The permit was then issued by DENR-7 Regional Director Isabelo Montejo last Oct. 22, 2014.

It stated that minimal loss of trees must be considered in the design of the oval to be constructed.

Before the cutting operation, a placard shall be installed within the cutting area informing the public that the operation is authorized by DENR, indicating the name of the permittee and the purpose.

The City Environment Natural Resources Office (CENRO) of Naga reported that 79 trees at most will be affected. The permit also does not allow the felling of Narra trees during flowering and fruiting stage to ensure natural regeneration.

The trees and parts shall be turned-over to the nearest DENR office for proper disposition based on existing guidelines.

The permit expires 50 days after its issuance.
