Cebu City bets to 2015 CVIRAA meet revealed

The Cebu City Department of Education (DepEd) released yesterday the partial list of athletes who will represent the city in the 2015 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet in Dumaguete City.

The athletes won golds and broke records in the recent 24th Cebu City Olympics covering volleyball, archery, lawn tennis, athletics, arnis, football, basketball and swimming.

Swimming accounted for most of the records broken in the two-weekend meet with Michael Ichiro Kong of the University of Cebu (UC) accounting for four. The graduating high school student logged new marks in the 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly, 200m backstroke and the 100m butterfly.

UC’s secondary girls also shattered the 200m medley relay record with a new time of 2:25.86, bettering Unit 8’s mark of 2:28.68.

Overall champion University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED) also broke three records – in the elementary boys 200m medley relay (2:54.41), secondary boys 200m medley relay (2:10.02) and Kirk Ebon in the 800m freestyle (10:32.72).

Cristante Veloso of Paref Springdale School which is part of North District 6, shattered two swim marks in the 100m backstroke (1:06.85) and the 100m freestyle (59.18 secs).

Maria Montessori Int’l School’s 200m freestyle relay squad reset Unit 5’s 2009 record of 2:12.28 with a new clocking of 1:56.47.

TEAM EVENTS
Representing the city in volleyball are the University of San Jose Recoletos (secondary boys and elementary girls), Southwestern University (secondary girls) and Colegio del Sto. Niño (elementary boys).

Smashers from USC-BED and SWU will lead the city’s team in secondary badminton while Units 8 and 7 will head the city’s elementary team.

Don Bosco Technology Center (DBTC) will man both the secondary and elementary football teams while USC-BED and the University of the Visayas (UV) will represent the city in elementary and secondary basketball, respectively.

USC’s Francis Lambayan, Beverly Enriquez, Christopher Encarnacion and Patricia Hillar Tapdasan will man the city lawn tennis team alongside UV’s Norman Enriquez and Jermaine Laurel and Bright Academy’s Zethley Alferez and Shayne Villareal.

Cebu City Don Carlos A. Gothong Memorial National High School’s Junmar Junas and Chinney Garcia will head the archery team.

Around 30 tracksters will banner the city’s secondary campaign in the CVIRAA including USC-BED’s Ivan Miguel Santos and Lynle Cardenas who both won three gold medals while 20 athletes will lead the elementary squad including triple gold medal winners Kyle Kenjie Dahili of North District 8 and Mary Joy Loberanis of USC-BED.

UC will lead the city’s secondary arnis team while UV’s gymnastics squad led by Reggie Dela Pisa will compose TCC’s lineup.

Meanwhile, DepEd Cebu City Sports Coordinator Zenaida Gocotano said they are still waiting for the lineup of the other events. Tournament managers are given until this Monday to submit their respective qualifiers.

The 2015 CVIRAA which was initially reported to be hosted by the Municipality of Balamban, will now be held in Dumaguete City after it was found out that the former lacked needed sports facilities.

USC kept its overall title of the 24th Cebu City Olympics after hauling 81 golds, 69 silvers and 61 bronzes in the combined secondary and elementary divisions.

UC placed second (59-39-46) while UV finished third (27-11-16).
