Tracksters from the Cebu Technological University (CTU) soared above their competition, winning the athletics title of the 2014 State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA)-7 regional meet at the Cebu City Sports Center.
After watching Cebu Normal University (CNU) swimmers dominate the swimming competition on Tuesday, CTU showed its might at the tracks and harvested seven more gold medals in yesterday’s final day of action to finish with a total tally of 16-13-5 (gold-silver-bronze).
The Bohol Island State University (BISU) finished second with a total harvest of 7 golds, 9 silvers and 7 bronze medals to duplicate its second place finish in swimming.
Coming in at the third place is CNU, which finished with a 7-6-6 record, while the Negros Oriental State University (2-1-3) and the Siquijor State University (1-3-8) finished at the fourth and fifth, respectively.
Today’s final day of action will feature the different ballgames.
There is still no clear front-runner in the race to the overall champion. Officials in track and field gave local scribes the medal tally, but they still need to convert this to points since the meet adopts the points system.
Bea Nadine Garcia, Clarisse Mordenno and Justine Tellidiga spearheaded CTU’s athletics domination as they each bagged a couple of golds in their respective divisions.
Garcia displayed her superior speed and stamina in capturing the gold medal in women’s 400-meter dash with a time of one minute and 11.05 seconds. She also won the 200m event, where she inked a time of 30.24 seconds to escape with a photo-finish victory against teammate Diorelyn Jose, who had a time of 30.40 seconds.
Mordenno, on the other hand, ruled the women’s long jump and triple jump events.
Tellidiga ruled the men’s long jump (6.42 meters) and the triple jump (13.07 meters) events while the other CTU gilts are from Ed Vincent Tuñacao (men’s discus throw), May Jeamela Tenio (women’s 100m), Rolando Magno Jr. (men’s 400m Hurdles), Airenne Lanojan (women’s 800m run), Jay Hermosilla (men’s 800m run) and the men’s and women’s 4×400 relay teams.
