Illegal sand collectors caught in Samboan

Two men, who were arrested for illegally collecting sand at the shoreline of barangay Suba, Samboan town in southern Cebu, are in deeper trouble after they attacked the policemen during their arrest.

Niko Encarquez, 18, allegedly choked PO1 Jason John Hirames when the police officer and his partners PO3 Johnny Marquiño and PO1 Serge Bert Hirames were about to arrest Encarquez and his companion Ryan Tulod, 22, last Saturday.

The policemen overpowered Encarquez and handcuffed him and Tulod. Despite being handcuffed, both suspects kept challenging the policemen to a fistfight.

The policemen, however, brought them to the police precinct where they were detained.

Charges of direct assault against a person of authority, and violating the country’s Fisheries Code  that bans the gathering, selling and exporting of white sand that make up a marine habitat, will be filed against the suspects.
