DSWD staffer uses comics in disseminating information

Sketches, lines and colors held together by unlimited thoughts of super heroes, civil engineer Rolando “Jay-ar” Maravilla Jr. of the Department of Social Welfare and Development in Central Visayas (DSWD 7) has that in mind during work breaks.

Maravilla works at the Kalahi-CIDSS-NCDDP (Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services-National Community-Driven Development Program) of DSWD.

He said he wants to help people through the use of comics in Kalahi program.

His comic strips tell the story of Super KC, the super hero who symbolizes Kalahi CIDSS-NCDDP and Kaya Ko Ang Pagbabago Campaign, a move to encourage people to change for the better.

“Marami tayong dalang impormasyon ngunit sayang ‘yun kung hindi makakarating sa mga tao,” Maravilla said.

Maravilla recently won both first and second place in the national level of DSWD’s Strategic Goals Toons’ Comics Strip Contest.

“Gusto kong ipakita sa mga tao na may mga ahensya ang gobyerno na handang tumulong sa kanila—na may hope, na totoo pala ‘yun,” Maravilla said.

Maravilla is assigned in Negros Oriental as part of the team who will guide communities on how to go about the technical aspects of their proposed sub-projects. Most of the projects range from access roads to foot bridges, water systems, community production, environmental protection and skills trainings, among others.

“Nakikita kong gustong gusto talaga nilang ma-implement yung mga proyekto nila. Kaya ginagamit ko ang aking kaalaman upang iguhit ang mga proposed projects ng mga komunidad in 3D. Sa ganun, mas na-iimagine nila ang hitsura nito,” Maravilla said in Filipino.

Although Maravilla hails from Palawan, communication is not a hindrance for him as he understands Cebuano well.
