AFTER finally getting the monkey off their backs, the San Miguel Beermen hope to get in a groove when they face off against the NLEX Road Warriors in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup today at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Beermen pounced on the absence of Meralco’s import Josh Davis and dominated down low en route to logging in their first win of the conference, 102-86. Davis apparently injured his back after landing hard on it late in the second period. That made all the difference as returning import Arizona Reid and reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo plowed through Meralco’s frontline and registered impressive numbers.
Reid, in his first game for San Miguel, had 29 points and 12 rebounds while Fajardo, the proud product of the University of Cebu, added 21 points and 22 boards to help the Beermen push their win-loss record to 1-4 and into a tie with Blackwater and NLEX who suffered a crushing 96-98 loss to Talk N Text, no thanks to a buzzer-beating jumper from Texters guard Jayson Castro.
Meanwhile in the second game, two struggling teams will try to get on the winning track as the injury-plagued Alaska Aces (2-3) take on the reeling Barako Bull (3-2). Alaska got bested by the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters last Friday, 89-99, in spite of the arrival of new import Damion Jones who debuted with28 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.
Barako Bull on the other hand, got buried under a deluge of baskets from streaky guard Terrence Romeo and lost for the second game in a row, 81-99, and drop to third place in the standings./Correspondent Jonas Panerio
