Balamban, Cebu— The defending champions Cebu City Niños started to distance themselves from the rest of the pack in the ongoing 2015 Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVIRAA) meet being held in different venues here.

The Niños now have 12 gold medals, 10 silvers and 12 bronze medals. Add the 20 golds, 12 silvers and three bronze medals won in swimming competition back in Cebu City (see separate story) and the Niños look headed for another championship run this year with a total of 32 gold medals, 22 silvers and 15 bronze medals.

Cebu Province is at a distant second with a gold-silver-bronze tally of 6-5-6, while the Province of Bohol is at third with a 5-7-2 count.

Samantha Gem Limos’ led the Ninos’ campaign as she dominated the elementary girl’s 200-meter run with a time of 30.12 seconds at the Exasperanza S. Binghay Memorial Sports Oval.

Also accounting for  Cebu City’s gold yesterday was Angel Mark Sicad, who topped the secondary boys’ discus throw with his 30.35-meter record.

Meanwhile, the Ninos’ secondary boys’ basketball team inked its second-straight win at the ES Binghay Memorial Cultural Center here after winning over Cebu Province, 71-54, in a very physical game that almost ended up in a melee.

Cebu City’s Orlan A. Wamar and Cebu Province’s Eric John Dequilla almost ended up trading blows after the latter stepped on the chest of Wamar in a scramble for the loose ball early in the game. The situation worsened when Wamar retaliated by hitting the Bantayan native Dequilla in the mouth with a wayward elbow in the ensuing play.

Game officials and the teams’ coaches quickly took control of the situation and restored order.

The Ninos’ elementary division football team also basked in the limelight yesterday after an  11-0 victory over the befuddled Talisay City eleven.

In volleyball, the Cebu City Ninos’ secondary boys squad, represented by the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars with reinforcements from the University of San Carlos Baby Warriors and the University of Southern Philippines-

Foundation Baby Pathers, tallied victory number three by downing Bohol Province.

The Ninos had to overcome an opening set debacle before they can dispose the hard-fighting Bohol spikers, 22-25, 25-18, 25-18.

In the distaff side, the Ninos’ volleybelles, represented by the Southwestern University, booted out Talisay City, 25-15, 25-13.

Meanwhile, the second-running Cebu Province  won some of its gold medals also in athletics.

Joya Optana ruled the elementary girls’ 400-m run with a time of one minute and 06.78 seconds to beat Cebu City’s Mary Joy Loberamis, who settle for the silver with a time of 1:06.96, and Cebu Province teammate Julibee Rose Arreglo, who clocked  1:10.53.

Roselyn Escarro also doled out a gilt for Cebu Province with a superior performance in the elementary girls’ 100-m hurdles, finishing the competition in just 18.65 seconds.
