PBA quarterfinal round starts today

Action shifts to higher gear as the quarterfinal round of the 40th PBA Commissioner’s Cup begins with a pair of best-of-three series today at the Araneta Coliseum.

Sister teams NLEX Road Warriors and Meralco Bolts take on each other at 4:15 p.m. while the defending champions Purefoods Star Hotshots clash with the Alaska Aces in the 7 p.m. encounter.

NLEX and Meralco both finished the eliminations with six wins and five losses with the former earning the fourth seed and the latter ending up as the fifth seed.

Prolific scorer Al Thornton of NLEX will be matched up against Meralco’s hardworking import Josh Davis.

Veteran center Asi Taulava, Niño Canaleta, Jonas Villanueva, Aldrech Ramos and Mark Cardona will also be there for the Boyet Fernandez-coached Road Warriors, while Meralco head coach Norman Black will get his local scoring from Gary

David, Cliff Hodge, Reynel Hugnatan, Mike Cortez and Sean Anthony.

The other series will have Tim Cone once again facing his former team Alaska, the squad he led to 13 titles before moving to Purefoods.

Denzel Bowles will lead the Hotshots’ attack and will be backed by a solid local crew led by James Yap, Peter June Simon, Marc Pingris, Marc Barroca and Joe Devance.

Alaska will rely on import Damion James, Cyrus Baguio, Calvin Abueva, Sonny Thoss, Jvee Casio, Vic Manuel and Dondon Hontiveros.

The other quarterfinal series will feature Rain or Shine versus Ginebra and Talk ‘N Text against Barako Bull. Rain or Shine and Talk ‘N Text have a twice-to-beat advantage.
