Part of Mactan’s beachline will again be transformed into a Spanish era battlefield for Monday’s re-enactment of the annual Kadaugan sa Mactan or Battle of Mactan.

Director Damian Gomez promised a “great show” for spectators who will be coming to witness the  re-enactment of the 1521 battle between island natives and Spanish invaders.

Actors Vin Abrenica and Joseph Bitangcol will play the roles of chieftain Lapu-Lapu who slays Portugese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

Miss Earth 2014 winner Jaime Herrel will be Lapu Lapu’s wife, Reyna Bulakna.

Malacañang has declared April 27  a special non-working holiday in Lapu-Lapu City.

abinet  Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. of the Presidential Communications Operations Office will be a  special guest.

This year’s re-enactment will be participated by 250 individuals aged 6 to 70 years old.

Arnis instructor Juy Bulotano said their performers participated in  workshops to make sure they have the stamina for the mock battle.

Their practices are held daily from 4 p.m. to dawn of the next day at the City Sports Complex.  This includes proper posture and handling of swords and shields, said Bulotano, who has been an arnis instructor for 20 years.

Gilbert Bulotano, an assistant instructor,  said they are using steel swords  and shields.

“I’ve been part of the Kadaugan sa Mactan for seven years.  Our practices are quite hard since we use genuine weapons to make the battle more realistic,” he added.

Artistic director Savier Palanca said the beachline where  the  Lapu Lapu shrine is located will be  used  like a “movie set.”/CTU Intern Marc Eric Cosep
