THE first day of the “Kick For Kathmandu” fund-raising football tournament was a resounding success as it generated P228,203 in cash donations.

The event drew 55 teams clashing in non-bearing games at the Cebu International School (CIS) football field in barangay Pit-os, Cebu City.

The charity game generated P71,600 from registration fees and sponsorships while the rest of the P228,203 total came from CIS’ various donation drives.

Proceeds of the two-day event will be donated to the Lincoln School of Nepal.

“We are thankful that the Cebuano footballers helped us gather funds to help the Nepalese. The entire event turned out to be very successful,” said CIS athletic director Pierra.

Nepal was struck last month by a 7.9 magnitude quake, killing thousands.

“They also helped us after typhoon Yolanda when CIS did a donation drive. Now it’s our turn to help them because they badly need it,” added Pierra.

The final day of the fund-raising campaign will be held today where the teams in the older age groups see action starting at 10 a.m.

“The students of CIS also did donation drives and we will continue even after this tournament,” Pierra said.

Oliver Colina, one of the tournament officials, credited the CIS for coming up with the fund-raising event that also gave a much-needed exposure for Cebuano footballers.

Since it was a non-competitive event, no winners were declared.
