The Southwestern University (SWU) Cobras started off right but lost steam at the finish to bow to the powerhouse San Beda Red Lions, 66-71, in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.

The Cebu champions actually led, 23-11, in the first quarter after a blazing start sparked by two-time Cesafi MVP Mark Jayven Tallo.

The cat-quick guard scored 13 of his 25 points in that blistering stretch spiked by three trifectas.

But the Red Lions, the many-time champions in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA),  found their groove in the second canto and flummoxed the Cobras at every turn, staging 24-9 run to take a 35-32 lead at half.

Not even a Melvin Holper triple could keep San Beda from staying in front, 52-51, heading to the final frame.

In the fourth, SWU stood toe to toe with San Beda but veteran guard Baser Amer, a member of the Southeast Asian Games-bound Gilas, provided the finishing touches to secure the Red Lions’ fifth win in six games.

SWU, on the other hand, fell to 1-4 (win-loss) and is in danger of missing the playoffs of this prestigious preseason competition.

Boko Mupungu, who was celebrating his birthday yesterday, finished with 15 points while Holper added 12.

SWU’s sophomore guard JR Parker had a dismal showing after scoring just three.
