THE ARELLANO University Chiefs broke into the win column after they edged the Lyceum Pirates, 80-78, in the 91st NCAA men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Arena in San Juan.

After a sluggish showing in their opening day loss to Jose Rizal University, Gilas Cadet Jio Jalalon sizzled and led the squad with a double-double of 20 points and 12 assists.

Zach Nicholls pitched in 16 while Kent Salado added 10. The Cebuano connection of Ivan Meca and Julius Cadavis combined for 14.

The Chiefs led by as many as 18 and were still ahead by 12, 78-66, at the halfway mark of the final frame.

But the Pirates came to within two, 78-80, before coming up short in crunchtime and lost for the second straight game.
