AN eight-year-old girl died in a fire that destroyed her family’s house in barangay Uling, Naga City in southern Cebu at 10:45 p.m. last Sunday.

Leona Abatayo slept alone at home when the fire broke out. Both parents were detained at the Naga City Jail for charges of qualified theft while her older stepbrother wasn’t around.

It was too late for firefighters to put out the fire since it easily ate up the house made of light materials.

Fire investigators said the fire may have been caused by a lighted candle that fell onto a bed. A relative, who lives in a nearby barangay, said the house had no electricity and used candles for lighting.
