Midnight fire razed 62 houses in Sambag 1

At least 62 houses in Sambag 1, Cebu City were razed in a fire that broke shortly before Sunday midnight.

The Cebu City Fire Department received the alarm at 11:30 p.m. from a residential area along Private road.

Social workers said there were 135 families or 484 individuals that were displaced by the fire.

The fire was raised to Task Force Alpha before fire was declared under control at close to 1 a.m., Monday. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama also came to assess the damage.

The third floor of First Baptist Church Christian School Inc. was also damaged by the fire.

Total damage was pegged at P1 million. according to fire investigators. They believe that a defective butane canister from the house of Saulong Castillo caused the fire.

Barangay captain Lemar Alcover said a special session will be held tonight to declare their barangay in a state of calamity.

The victims are now temporarily evacuated to Sambag 1 gym.
