DAVAO CITY – America would never die for us, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte told visiting military attachés, some of them coming from the US and China, over trouble at the South China Sea.

The mayor met the military attachés from Indonesia, Vietnam, China, US and Singapore to discuss security matters among these countries in a hotel here on Thursday.

“If America really cared, it (the US) would have sent its aircraft carrier and missile frigate the moment China started reclaiming the land in the contested territory but no such thing happened,” Duterte said as he told the visiting military attachés from China the Philippines meant no war when it only defended the country’s fishing grounds which ended in a spat with China.

He said the Philippine fishing grounds in the South China Sea has been an important source of food for Filipino fishers.
