Sectoral groups in Cebu will hold a solidarity gathering at the Fuente Osmeña Circle tomorrow to open the celebration of Peace Month in September.

“The celebration is intended to promote public awareness and support to eradicate the biases and prejudice against different groups in society,” said Jamil Faisal Adiong, convenor of the Peace Na Ta movement.

The movement is comprised of student, religious, women and the lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender (LGBT) groups.

The gathering is supported by Cebu City Councilor Alvin Dizon, who authored a resolution supporting the month-long observance in order to draw public support on peace-building among communities.

Dizon said Cebu City is the first city in the country that passed an ordinance penalizing discrimination against marginalized groups in society.

He also called on Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to enforce the ordinance.

Rama said he will ask the City Legal Office to study the ordinance and help create a commission that will enforce it.
