Cebu Provincial Board (PB) Member Grecilda “Gigi” Sanchez announced her bid for Congress yesterday, saying she felt it was destiny calling her.

“I submit to destiny’s call,” she said in a speech during the general assembly of Liberal Party (LP) members from the third district in the province.

Held at the White Gold House Restaurant in Cebu City, would-be candidates for elective posts from mayor down to barangay captain attended the gathering to express their full support to the LP.

The oath-taking was led by Gov. Hilario Davide III, the LP Cebu chairman.

Sanchez honored her late father, former vice governor Gregorio Sanchez Jr., saying she wouldn’t be facing big crowds today if it weren’t for him.

Incumbent third district representative Gwendolyn Garcia welcomed LP’s decision  to field Sanchez to run against her in the 3rd district congressional race.

Garcia said it’s good that she has an opponent so the people in the 3rd district can have choices whom to vote in the election.

“For me,  it’s a welcome development. Election man na, mopili man ang mga tawo kinsa gayud sa ilang pagtuo maoy labing angayan nga morepresentar kanila sa distrito, busa I would wish board member Sanchez good luck (The people will choose who will best represent the district),” Garcia said over dyLA.

Sanchez said her motivation to run for Congress stems from her willingness to serve and her desire to make a change in governance.

Garcia is confident that the people will still support  her as she implemented several projects in the district.

Garcia claimed she has upgraded bridges and concreting of national roads is almost finished.

She also implemented farm-to-market road projects, constructed classrooms and multipurpose halls to be used as evacuation centers.

Aside from these projects, Garcia said she was able to give scholarships to around 3,400 students, help several poor patients admitted at Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center and extend cash and burial assistance to poor families.

Garcia said she now enjoys the work as congresswoman and that’s the reason she decides to run again for another term.

Adopting the administration’s mantra of “Daang Matuwid,” (straight path) Sanchez said she is running not as a politician but as a public servant.

Meanwhile, Garcia revealed it’s final that her brother Winston Garcia will run for governor.
