Remembering Bonifacio

Don’t work hard to become a hero, work hard because it is the right thing to do.’
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama said this during the celebration of the 152nd birth anniversary of Gat Andres Bonifacio at Plaza Independencia yesterday.
The commemoration rite was attended by city officials and different organizations including the Knights of Columbus.
Cebu Historic Affairs Commission chairman Arsenio Pacaña, during his speech, said Bonifacio played a big role in liberating Filipinos.
“As the first president of the Philippine archipelago, Bonifacio revolutionized the hearts of the people during the Spanish period. If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t be enjoying our present victory – a free Philippine government,” he said.
Pacaña pointed out that Cebuanos also mounted strong resistance to Spain.
The mayor led a flower offering at the statue of Bonifacio.
In Colon Street, over one hundred militants brought streamers and placards in a march by Fuente Osmeña.
“The revolution has not yet ended. The Philippines is not yet free from foreign control,” said Niño Olayvar, vice presidnet of Anakbayan- Visayas.
He said Bonifacio was a good model for idealistic youths.
In Mandaue City, a 6:30 a.m. Mass was held at St. Joseph’s Shrine led by Mayor Jonas Cortes.
