Labella tells PROBE to remove cell sites

DESPITE the request of Sun Cellular to extend the use of its cell sites, Acting Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella ordered the Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification and Enhancement (PROBE) team to implement the removal of the telecommunication company’s two cell sites in Sitio Calvary, Barangay Apas in Cebu City.

While Sun Cellular requested a six-month extension to continue the use of its cell sites, Globe Telecom’s permit, on the other hand, has  expired.

Labella said he has yet to receive a copy of Sun Cellular’s request for extension but he told reporters that he would not grant it, as  the removal order has already been made.

He also said that  since the dismantling of the tower would  take time, deactivation should be done first.

Yesterday morning, Labella visited Sitio Calvary to check if the cell sites were still operating.

If today both towers were still in operation, he said the city would ask the two telecommunication companies to deactivate their cell sites as soon as possible.

Globe Telecom has said it was scouting for an area where to build a new cell site.

Residents were thankful to Labella for his effort against the cell sites’ presence in their community.

On Tuesday, Labella will meet with representatives of the two telcos, the residents and PROBE to determine how they can dismantle the tower.

Labella said the operation might need the help of telcos employees since City Hall has no  knowledge on how to dismantle telcos towers.

Part of their discussion will  include measures to ensure the safety of the residents during the dismantling operation.

“We must ensure that not a single house will be affected during the dismantling to have a win-win solution,” said Labella.

Labella was also optimistic that both telcos would  cooperate.
